What Families Often Ask
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What does it mean to be an Active School?
Forget the image of a student sitting in silence, just listening. At Mayrit, knowledge isn’t something you receive—it’s something you build.
From “Passive Objects” to “Active Protagonists”
In our school, children are not empty vessels waiting for information; they are the engine of their own growth.
How do we live this every day?
Our model is built upon three fundamental pillars:
🧮 Manipulative Materials: Children integrate knowledge through their senses. Using self-correcting materials, they are empowered to discover and learn from their own mistakes.
🤝Decision Making:Alongside their mentors, students set their own academic goals and choose the tools they need to achieve them.
💡Personal Initiative:The children themselves propose the workshops, projects, and field trips that spark their curiosity.
Educating in Responsibility
At Mayrit, freedom and commitment go hand in hand. Our students practice decision-making daily, learning how to reach agreements and—most importantly—how to commit to them.

What is NEASC?
NEASC (New England Association of Schools and Colleges) is an independent, voluntary, non-profit organization that partners with over 1,500 public, independent, and international schools in the United States and across the globe.
Its mission is to evaluate, support, and promote high-quality education for all students through accreditation, professional assistance, and the pursuit of best practices.
Continuous Improvement and Respect for Identity
NEASC provides a framework for significant and continuous school-wide improvement, while honoring the unique culture and context of each institution it supports.
A Legacy of Excellence
Founded in 1885, NEASC has been working to establish and maintain high standards for all levels of education longer than any other accrediting agency in the United States.
What curriculum is taught at Mayrit?
At Mayrit, we offer a comprehensive and internationally accredited education that covers the following stages:
Early Childhood Education (Preschool/Kindergarten).
Primary Education (Elementary School).
An American International Curriculum
As a NEASC-accredited institution, Mayrit follows an American International Curriculum. This model allows us to integrate active pedagogies (such as Montessori and Forest School) while meeting high academic standards that are recognized globally.
Official Recognition and Mobility
Because we are an accredited international school, the studies completed at Mayrit have full official validity. This ensures that our students can transition seamlessly to any other educational system, whether in Spain or abroad, at any point in their academic journey.
In short, we provide an education that respects the child’s natural development while ensuring a solid, officially recognized academic foundation.
A Day in the Life: Our Daily Rhythm
In our school, we don’t rush. We believe in a relaxed environment from the very first minute, allowing learning to flow naturally. This is how we live our day-to-day:
☀️ A Gentle Welcome (Unrushed Arrival)
- Open Doors (20 min): A time for families to accompany their children, say hello, and say goodbye calmly.
- Autonomy from the Start: Each child organizes their belongings in their cubby before meeting their group and mentor in the classroom.
⭕ The Morning Circle
We start the day by looking into each other’s eyes. It’s a time to greet one another, share how we feel, and organize the day’s proposals together.
🧠 Work & Exploration Sessions
Learning comes to life through different modalities adapted to every pace:
Exploration: Working with hands-on, manipulative materials.
Workshops: Both guided and elective sessions.
🌿 Recess & Free Play
A vital time for connection outdoors. Fresh air, spontaneous movement, and community life.
🎨 Continuing the Journey
After the break, we resume our activity with new sessions, creative workshops, or academic projects.
🥘 2:00 PM – End of the Academic Day
The classroom sessions conclude, and our lunch and free play space begins, maintaining the same atmosphere of respect and care.
🌲 Fridays: We Head to the Woods!
We transform our day by moving our learning into the wild. Fridays are dedicated to Nature Exploration, playing among the trees, and direct discovery of the natural world.
How Do Children Learn at Mayrit?
Our pedagogical approach moves away from traditional instruction to focus on lived experience. Learning here is not something that “happens” in a book, but something that children actively construct.
🌿 Prepared Environments for Autonomy
We design spaces that invite action. These are not static classrooms, but environments where every material has a purpose and where little ones can:
-
Explore at their own pace.
-
Play as the main vehicle for discovery.
-
Experiment with freedom and safety.
🤝 Learning through Connection
For us, there is no learning without emotion. Children learn:
-
Through others: In relationship with their companions and peers.
-
In community: Sharing discoveries and solving challenges together.
🔍 The Process: Investigate, Question, Experience
Instead of receiving answers, we encourage them to ask questions. The learning cycle at Mayrit follows this path:
-
Exploration and manipulation: Direct contact with real materials.
-
Investigation: Searching for solutions and questioning the established.
-
Lived experience: Integrating knowledge through practice and the use of all the senses.
Do the children have a schedule?
Yes, and it is a key element of their sense of security. At Mayrit we work with a clear and defined schedule that allows children to anticipate what is going to happen, providing them with calm and confidence.
However, our structure is not rigid; it is a living framework that adapts to what truly matters: the wellbeing of each person.
The two pillars of our time:
-
💎 Clear Structure: We establish stable rhythms for arrivals, the opening circle, work periods, lunch, and play. This builds habit and inner order within the group.
-
🍃 Conscious Flexibility: Within that schedule, we have the sensitivity to pause or pivot if an individual or group need calls for it. We do not sacrifice a child’s wellbeing to “stick to the clock”.
Why do we do it this way?
-
Emotional security: Knowing what comes next allows the child to relax and focus on their activity.
-
Respect for individual rhythms: If an investigation or project is at a moment of peak concentration, we allow that flow to be respected.
-
Balance: We combine moments of high activity with moments of calm and quiet withdrawal.
What is the role of English at Mayrit?
At our school, English is not just studied in books; it is lived. We are committed to organic and natural learning, based on daily interaction and emotional respect.
Natural Immersion: Guided by Native Speakers
Our pedagogical team includes two native companions whose working language is English. Their presence ensures that the language flows at any moment of the day:
-
During free play: Spontaneous conversations while playing in the garden or playground.
-
In academic sessions: English becomes the tool for exploring materials and projects.
Specific Sessions: Playful Dynamics
In addition to daily immersion, we dedicate specific time to language practice:
-
Active learning: Sessions based on fun dynamics and games.
-
Solid foundation: Practice of grammar and vocabulary in a functional, not memorisation-based, way.
❤️ Our priority: Emotional Wellbeing
We have a non-negotiable commitment to the safety of our children. That is why:
What is the Settling-in Process like?
At Mayrit, starting school is not a “cut”, but a gentle transition. Our goal is for each child to build a solid bond with their companion while feeling safe at all times.
✨ The keys to our process
-
No rush: We respect each child’s individual pace; there is no stopwatch, only an attentive eye on every need.
-
Family presence: We ask that a reference person be available during the first weeks (usually two) to provide security for the little one.
-
Total flexibility: The process adapts and shapes itself according to how the child feels each day.
🐣 In the Early Years stage (Step by step)
We design a gradual approach so that the classroom becomes their “second home”:
-
Reduced Hours Week: We begin with fewer hours, gradually extending
Can my children transfer to a Spanish school after Primary or Secondary?
Yes, completely normally. We want families to have the absolute reassurance that alternative education poses no barrier to the academic future of your children.
✅ Official Academic Validity
Mayrit operates within the same validity framework as any other educational centre:
-
Officially Accredited Documentation: Mayrit students receive the same official academic documentation as any other school in Spain.
-
Barrier-free transfer: This means they can transfer to any centre (state, semi-private or private) at any point in their schooling.
-
No extra procedures: They do not need to sit special exams or undergo external validation; the transition to a secondary school or institute is handled directly and administratively.
💼 A future without limits
When they finish their time with us, your children will carry not only their official academic records, but also a backpack full of tools for autonomy, critical thinking and emotional management, which will allow them to adapt successfully to any future educational environment.
What are the school hours?
At Mayrit we take care of rhythms. That is why our school day is designed to balance academic time with the work-life needs of each family.
🌞 The School Day
-
Relaxed Arrival (09:00 – 09:20): We open the doors for 20 minutes to avoid any rush.
Pedagogical suggestion: We recommend arriving at 09:00 so that your child enjoys a truly unhurried arrival and connects with the environment before the day begins.
-
Academic Pick-up (14:00): Work sessions end. This is the pick-up

We work with the catering service of “La cocina de mi casa” (“My Home Kitchen”), a specialist company that shares our values. Their approach is based on:
