Ben Galvin
BILINGUAL MENTOR
I come from a large family, raised surrounded by older brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. My brother taught me how to draw and build things; my sister taught me how to change a diaper and how to swim. I inherited my musical taste from my other siblings, and my writing style from my parents, who were journalists.
After graduating with a degree in Fine Arts, I moved to Spain to be with my partner, whom I met during my studies. During my first years in Madrid, I worked as an English teacher, a translator, and also as an illustrator and graphic designer for a pioneer company specializing in communicating complex concepts through visual thinking.
My partner is a secondary school teacher, and when we decided to start a family, we also began to learn about how to best educate our children. That was the moment I decided to become a teacher.
I had a wonderful time working as an assistant in two schools in Madrid. However, the more I learned about methodologies like Montessori and Waldorf, the more convinced I became that this was the direction I wanted to take.
During my time as an assistant, driven by the hope of finding an alternative to conventional education, I trained in the Forest School methodology with Philip Bruchner. I was amazed by the level of autonomy granted to the children and the positive impact it had on them. It was hard to return to a conventional classroom every Monday after spending the weekend in what I was convinced a real school should be: a place where children are heard, where they are allowed to grow, explore, and simply be themselves.
When my daughter was born, I dedicated myself to finding something different from the centers where I had worked. I found Mayrit—a place where every child is respected as an individual, where curiosity and exploration are nurtured, and where everyone plays an active role in their own education.
Now, I am exactly where I want to be. I might be far from where I grew up, but I am surrounded by another great family that continues to teach me something new every day.
